John Hayes is Senior Scientist in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Massachusetts. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has made important contributions to understanding the Earth's carbon cycle by demonstrating the importance of methane cycling in ancient ecosystems and by introducing and developing compound-specific isotopic studies. His current research focuses on factors controlling the isotope composition (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur) of organic materials in marine environments; reconstruction of ancient conditions (pCO2, trophic structure) from isotopic compositions of organic compounds in sediments; development of the global carbon cycle over geologic time; and techniques of isotope analysis.
