Harrison "Jack" Schmitt has a diverse experience as a geologist, pilot, astronaut, administrator, businessman, writer, and U. S. Senator. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the California Institute of Technology and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Geology from Harvard University.
Schmitt was a member of the Apollo 17 mission in 1972 and thereby the first and only geologist and scientist to land on the Moon. Following that mission, he managed NASA's Energy Program Office, and then served for six years in the United States Senate representing New Mexico. Later he served on the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, the President's Commission on Ethics Law Reform, the Army Science Board, as Co-Chairman of the International Observer Group for the 1992 Romanian elections, and as Vice Chairman of the U.S. delegation to the 1992 World Administrative Radio Conference in Spain. Schmitt is currently Chairman of the NASA Advisory Council. He is the author of the recently published book, "Return to the Moon – Exploration, Enterprise and Energy in the Human Settlement of Space".
Today, Schmitt consults, speaks and writes on policy issues concerning space exploration, lunar resources and the American Southwest. He is founder and chairman of Interlune-Intermars Initiative, Inc., an organization that seeks to advance the private sector's acquisition of lunar resources, helium-3 fusion power and the broad clinical use of medical isotopes produced by fusion-related processes
