Dawn Sumner is Associate Professor of Geology and Chancellor's Fellow at the University of California, Davis. She studies chemical changes in the oceans and atmosphere through time to try to understand how life influenced these changes and how the changes influenced the evolution of life. Specifically, her research uses stratigraphic, petrographic, and low temperature geochemical techniques to address the biological and abiotic controls on carbonate precipitation with the intent to understand ancient ocean chemistry and the interactions between microbial communities and their environment. Dr. Sumner has also participated in the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group and is Co-I on the MastCam team for the 2009 Mars Science Laboratory rover mission.
