Hal Weaver

Hal Weaver is a member of the Planetary Exploration Group in the Space Department of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. During the past 15 years, he has led many investigations of comets using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope (HST); asteroid 1984 FN was renamed to asteroid "Halweaver" in recognition of his work on the chemical composition of comets. Weaver has also led several investigations of comets with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) spacecraft, and he continues his infrared and radio investigations of comets using ground-based observatories. Weaver has published over 100 papers, including studies of planets and their satellites in addition to comets. He has a longstanding interest in research on the formation and evolution of solar system, including the role of the Kuiper belt. Weaver is currently the Project Scientist on the New Horizons Pluto/Kuiper Belt mission.
